1.4 glycogen Flashcards
Where is glycogen found in
Animals and bacteria
What is the difference between structure of starch and glycogen
Structure of starch and glycogen are similar except in glycogen smaller chains but are more branched
Where is glycogen stored in
Glycogen is stored in muscles and the liver
Why’s the mass of carbonhydrate relatively small
This is because fat is the main storage molecule in animals
Why does the structure of glycogen suit it for storage
Insoluble
It’s compact meaning a lot can be stored in small place
More branched meaning enzymes can act on it faster therefore more rapidly broken down to form glucose monomers. Glucose monomers used in respiration
Why does glycogen need to be more branched than starch
Glycogen needs to be more branched because as they are mainly found in animals they need to be broken down at a higher rate as animals use up more energy than plants which are not as branches.
