(1.2)Carbohydrates-Monosaccharides Flashcards
What is the difference between alpha and beta glucose
OH and H are swapped. H is at top on alpha
What is a unique feature of carbon atoms
Carbon atom rapidly form bonds with other carbon atoms
What is the basic monomer unit in carbohydrates
Glucose is the basic monomer unit. It is also known as a saccharide
What is single monomer of carbon hydrate called
Monosaccharide
What is the generalformula of monosaccharide
(CH2O)n where n can be any number between 3 and 7
What is a reducing sugar
A reducing sugar can donate electrons (reduction of another chemical)
What is Benedicts reagent
It is an alkaline solution of Cu(II) sulfate
How is a insoluble red precipitate of Cu(I) oxide formed
Heating up a reducing sugar with Benedict’s reagent
How is the Benedicts test carried out
Add 2cm³ of food sample in test tube( if sample is not already in liquid form grind it up)
Add equal volume of Benedict’s solution
Heat mixture in gently boiling water for 5 min
How do you know if reducing sugar is present through a Benedict’s test
There will be a colour change from blue to orange brown which indicates the presence of reducing sugar
Why do large molecules often contain carbon
This is because carbon atoms form the backbone of a molecule due to its rapid bond forming with other carbon atoms
