1.4 Free Will, Determinism and Predestination Flashcards
What is Free Will?
Humans choose their behaviour having made conscious decisions.
Non - religous Libertarianism
There ‘appear’ to be more responsibilities
Quote for predestination- Jeremiah 1:5
‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you’
Christian: Predestination
Everyone has original sin
God has predecided who he will save = elect
These people will have the holy spirit within them, so they freely make good decisions
People who will not be saved = reprobate
If all humans have original sin, then god must have chosen who he will save before they existed
Free will Genesis 2:16
‘Adam and Eve were free to eat from any tree in the Garden’
Non religious beliefs on free will
Determinisim
Determinism
We have no free will, and our actions are determined by external factors
Factors of determinism
Genetic - our actions are determined by our character, which is determined by our genes
Psychological - nurture determines our actions
Physical - our thoughts also must have a cause
