Define product or service design
Combination of factors needed in designing a product.
Aesthetics, function and costs
What are aesthetics
The consumers feeling towards a product usually based off of how the senses react to the product or service. Could be based off emotional attachment e.g John Lewis Christmas ads
What is function
What the product does and how well does it perform. What are the USP’s ?
What is cost (economic manufacture)
How much does it cost to produce or deliver a product or service ?
Lower costs means a greater competitive advantage but does this affect product quality ?
What factors effect how a product or service is designed
- bespoke design
- standard design
- efficiencies
- waste minimisation
- re-use
- recycling
- ethical sourcing
What is bespoke design ?
Custom made for the consumer e.g. a wedding cake or wedding plan.
What is standard design
Products or services that are sold as a standard, the customer can’t add any extra features
How does efficiency affect product design
Efficiency is changed by what materials are used and how the product is manufactured
How does Re-usability affect product design
Being able to reuse a product gives the customer good value for money
How does recyclability affect product design
This appeals to a green consumer and is good for the environment
How does ethical sourcing affect product/ service design
Products made in safe facilities by workers that are treated well appeals to the consumer.
