Q

Plants that grow on the surface of the water block out the sunlight.

How does this effect the levels of oxygen in the water?

A

The levels of oxygen in the water decrease due to:
1. Bacteria that break down dead materials increase in numbers and use up more oxygen from water.

  1. Plants in the water cant photosynthesis and thus die and stop producing oxygen.

Q

Explain the cause of eutrophication.

A

Too much fertiliser in the soil is washed away by rain. This gets into water and raises the natural concentration of nitrates and sulphate.

Q

Why do lichens indicate the prsense or abscence of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides in the air?

A

Different species of lichen can tolerate different amounts of sulfur dioxide amd other polluting gases such as nitrogen oxides. Some grow in their presnce others die.

Q

What can the presence of either stone fly larvae and freshwater shrimps or bloodworms and sludge worms tell us about the levels of pollution in the water.

A

Stonefly larvae and freshwater shrimp need a lot of oxygen and thus wouldn’t be in polluted water. Their presence would indicate little to no pollution.

Bloodworms and sludge worms are adapted to live where there is little oxygen in the water. Their presence would indicate that there is a lot of pollution in the water.
