1.15-16.Hormones and Diabetes Flashcards
What is a target hormone?
An organ that responds to a certain hormone.
What happens when the concentration of glucose goes above a certain concentration?
The pancreas releases insulin which effects the liver, it takes glucose out of the blood and converts it into glycogen(store of glucose) which decreases the levels of glucose in the blood.
What are hormones produced by?
Glands called endocrine glands.
What may too high and too low glucose concentration result in?
Low glucose concentration may lead to unconsciousness.
High glucose concentration may lead to tiredness and damage to organs.
What is the cause of type 1 diabetes?
The pancreas does not produce insulin when the concentration of glucose in the blood is too high it can’t be brought down.
Why must insulin be injected into the fatty layer beneath the skin?
Fat easily absorbs insulin, it then spreads into blood vessels and is carried around the body.
When does type 2 diabetes occur?
When the cells in a persons body doesn’t respond well to insulin and becomes resistant to it.
What are risk factors that may cause type 2 diabetes?
- High fat diets.
- Lack of exercise.
- Getting older.
- Being obese.
