1.25-26. Pathogens And Infections Flashcards
Name the 4 types of pathogens.
- Bacteria-TB and cholera
- Viruses (disease)- influenza, mumps, AIDS
- Fungi- athletes foot, fungus
- Protoctist- protozoan causes malaria.
What are vectors?
Larger organisms(insects) that carry and spread pathogens.
Eg. Mosquitoes can pass pathogens into blood.
Houseflies can carry bacteria from faeces to food.
What are pathogens?
Microorganism that cause infectious diseases passed from one infected person to a non-infected person.
What are antiseptics?
They are chemical substances that kill microorganisms outside the body and help prevent pathogens from getting into open wound.
What are antibiotics?
Chemical substances that kill/prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi but not human cells.
They don’t kill viruses.
How does bacteria form resistance from antibiotics?
Once antibiotics are used, susceptible bacteria are killed leaving only the resistant bacteria.
The resistant bacteria survive and reproduce, producing a new colony of resistant bacteria.
What is MRSA?
A bacterium that is resistant to many antibiotics.
True or false:
Antibiotics kills only the bad bacteria.
False,
False antibiotics kills many bacteria, meaning resistant bacteria of all type will be left behind
