What were reasons for Russian defeats
Poor communication
Lack of infrastructure
Outdated tactics
Poor leadership
Supplied and equipment
What effect did poor communication have
Outdated telegraph system meant that orders got lost
Wireless messages were intercepted by the Germans which gave away their positions
What did lack of infrastructure and lack of supplies and equipment mean
Poor roads + railway system meant supplies couldn’t reach the front line
Soldiers didn’t have enough equipment (e.g coats / rifles)
How did the leadership of the tsar worsen things
Tsar was blamed for defeats
The peasants image of the tsar was further shattered by the experience of war
Military effects of defeats
Frequent casualties lowered morale of soldiers
Lost respect for officers
Desertion
Discontent spread to people of Russia
Economic and social effects of war
Inflation increases - due to less food
Less food production due to lack of horses + labour
Consumer goods became scarce and expensive- factories closed - shortages of coal, iron, steel
Factories closed —> unemployment + poverty
Higher prices - wages still low
Political effects of war
Tsar had to work with duma - weakened tsars position
Tsar left to command military- Alexandra left in charge
People didn’t like her due to her German origins and as she didn’t listen to duma
Change in ministers meant that no one was properly organising food, fuel and supplied to the cities
As the war got worse, the situation in cities became more desperate, causing a decrease in support for the tsar by middle and upper classes
