1.3 - pH Flashcards
What is the normal pH for blood?
7.4
Why can the body not tolerate an out of range pH?
Because cells and metabolic functions in the body can’t function
What body organs malfunctioning could be responsible for a pH imbalance?
Lungs and Kidneys
What does pH stand for?
Potential hydrogen ion concentration
Define an acid
An acid is a substance that increases the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution
Define a base
A base is a substance the increases the hydroxide concentration in a solution
What is the range of the pH scale and the ranges of acid vs base?
0-14. 0-7 is acidic. 7-14 is basic. 7 is neutral.
A pH of 14 has how many less H+ than pH of 12
14-12=2 so 10^2 aka 100
Why are buffers important in the body?
The body has enzymes which catalyze important metabolic reactions. These enzymes function optimally within a narrow pH range and can even denature; buffers resist major pH shifts allowing enzymes to work optimally.
How do buffers work?
Buffers accept H+ when they are in excess and donate H+ when they are few in the solution
