Q

Why are buffers important in the body?

A

The body has enzymes which catalyze important metabolic reactions. These enzymes function optimally within a narrow pH range and can even denature; buffers resist major pH shifts allowing enzymes to work optimally.

Q

How do buffers work?

A

Buffers accept H+ when they are in excess and donate H+ when they are few in the solution
