13: Mechanical Engineering Flashcards
Define motion transmission
Relaying motion from one part to another without altering the motion’s direction
Name the 3 types of motions
Rotational (moves around one ais)
Translational (up and down, left and right)
Helical (rot + trans)
Define gear trains
Transmission, wheels turning in opposite directions of each other, rotation, reversible
Define friction gears
Transmission, gears without teeth moving in opposite directions of each other, rotation, reversible
Define the chain and sprocket
Transmission, rotation, reversible, wheels on same side of chain move in same direction
Define the belt and pulley
Transmission, rotation, reversible, belt follows direction pulley moves in
Define a worm and worm gear
Transmission, rotation, not reversible, toothed components not parallel
How does speed between components work?
Increasing when large to small
Decreasing when small to large
Constant if objects are all same size
Define motion transformation
Motion transmitted gets altered (ie rot to trans), driver and driven not making same motion
Define the slider-crank mechanism
rot to trans/trans to rot, reversible
Define the cam and follower + eccentric
Cam rotates and follower translates, not reversible
Eccentric: cam axis not centered allowing follower to have greater movement
Define the rack and pinion system
rot to trans/trans to rot, reversible
Define the 2 types of screw and gear systems
Not reversible, rot to trans
1: screw (driver), nut (driven)
2: nut (driver), screw (driven)
