11: Genetics (EST) Flashcards
What is a character trait?
Physical, physiological, pyschological attribute (eye colour, ear shape, metabolism, etc)
What is chromatin?
Mass of DNA combined with proteins inside of nucleus, has not divided
What does DNA stand for?
Deoxyribonucleic acid
What is a chromosomes? How many in humans?
Divided chromatin, 46 (23n)
How are chromosomes classed?
According to karyotype (grouping by size)
What are the female and male chromosomes?
Female: XX (homologous)
Male: XY (non-homologous)
Describe DNA
Double helix made up of nucleotides (sugar, phosphate, nitrogenous base A, C, T or G)
What is a gene?
DNA segment containing information to make proteins
Define allele
Possible gene formation, each having a different nucleotide sequence
Correlation between alleles, genes, chromosomes
Though a homologous chromosome pair may have the same gene, the alleles (way it is formed) may be different
Homo- vs hetero- zygote
Homo: 2 identical alleles for a trait/gene
Hetero: 2 opposite alleles for a trait/gene
How is an allele chosen?
Dominant > recessive
Geno- vs pheno- type
Geno: all alleles for a trait
Pheno: allele expressed (dominant)
What is heredity?
Traits being passed down generations
