1.3 Access & Storage Devices Flashcards
Handheld devices
Small, light and have the potential to be worn on the human body (smartwatch)
Portable devices and can be taken anywhere
Due to their small size they require Space for a powerful processor or high memory capacity
Handheld devices (Pros and cons)
Light and portable, they can be easily carried
Freedom of movement, runs on battery power so it doesn’t require a power source
Relies on battery power
Can get lost or stolen
Small memory and low versatility
No cooling system
Low processing power due to small size
Portable devices (Different form handheld devices)
Larger and more powerful, they tend to be carried in a bag
E.g Laptops and Large tablets
Portable devices (Pros and Cons)
Light and portable they can easily be transported in a bag
Works without a power outlet as its battery powered so it can be used anywhere e.g a train or cafe
More powerful and versatile than handheld
Reliant on battery power
Lower processing power compared to a PC
Smaller memory compared to a PC
Fixed devices
(Smart TV, Desktop, game consoles)
Requires a constant power connection e.g a desktop computer (PC) which has higher processing speeds and storage capacity than handheld or portable.
Fixed devices (pros and cons)
Desktops have high processing speeds
Contain sufficient cooling systems
Large storage capacities in general and can be upgraded
Desktops are very versatile, powerful enough to be used for 1000 purposes
Reliant on a power outlet
Heavy and difficult to move
May require additional components e.g a monitor for a desktop
More expensive than portable and handheld
Shared devices
Allows multiple users to access data at the same time e.g cloud storage
Cloud storage used by:
Schools
Businesses
Individuals
A data centre:
Dedicated building that contains computer systems
Database server:
Can be accessed from multiple connected computers and users can manipulate the data
Shared devices (Pros and Cons)
Accessible by multiple users at the same time
Cloud storage frees up physical space as users use a third party service
Cloud storage allow authorised users to work and access information remotely
Data centres allow online services to run all hours of the day and year
Requires technical knowledge to set up
Reliant on stable network connections
If connection lost, access to the device will be affected
