12.3 Functional Organization of the Nervous System Part 2 Flashcards
What is the dorsal root ganglion?
bunch of somatic and autonomic sensory neuron cell bodies located just dorsal to the spinal cord
What is the meninges?
protective sheath of the brain and spinal cord
What is a preganglionic neuron?
cell body in the brainstem or spinal cord that sends an axon to an autonomic ganglion located outside of the spinal column
What is a postganglionic neuron?
sends an axon to an effector
What is the thoracolumbar system?
sympathetic system; all sympathetic preganglionic neurons have their cell bodies in the thoracic and lumbar region of the spinal column
What is the craniosacral system?
parasympathetic system; all preganglionic neurons have cell bodies in the brainstem or sacral region
Where and how many adrenal glands?
kidneys, two
What is the adrenal medulla?
inner portion of the adrenal gland that releases epinephrine and norepinphrine into the bloodstream
What is the adrenal cortex?
outer portion of the adrenal gland that produces cortisol in response to stress and aldosterone in response to low blood pressure or low blood osmolarity
What system is the adrenal medulla a part of?
sympathetic nervous system
