12.3 Functional Organization of the Nervous System Flashcards
What is sensory function?
receiving information; carried out by the peripheral nervous system
What is the integrative function?
processing information; carried out by the CNS
What is motor function?
acting on the information; carried out by CNS
What are motor neurons?
carry information from the nervous system toward organs which can act upon information; innervate effectors
What are sensory neurons?
carry information toward the CNS
What are motor neurons also known as?
efferent neurons
What are sensory neurons also known as?
afferent neurons
What is a reflex?
direct motor response to a sensory input which occurs without conscious thought
What is a monosynaptic reflex arc?
reflex involving only two neurons and one synapse
What is an inhibitory interneuron?
neuron that forms an inhibitory synapse with a motor neuron
What is reciprocal inhibition?
concurrent relaxation and contraction
What are the two subdivisions of the PNS?
somatic and autonomic
What is the somatic division of the PNS?
concerned with conscious sensation and deliberate, voluntary movement of skeletal muscle
What is the autonomic division of the PNS?
concerned with digestion, metabolism, circulation, perspiration and other involuntary processes
What are the two subdivisions of the autonomic nervous system?
sympathetic and parasympathetic
