2 main rules

A

No words begin with 2 unstressed syllables
No word can have two consecutive stressed syllables

ex : appreciate → appreciation

A

If the word is derived from another word

ex : appreciate → appreciation
put the secondary stress on the stressed syllable of the deriving form

primary stress of : appreci’ation
primary stress of the deriving form : a’ppreciate
a,ppreci’ation

==> primary stress of origin : 2ndary stress of 2nd word

The placement of secondary stress depends on the number of syllables before primary stress

A

if only one syllable before primary stress → no secondary stress : /01(-)/
if two syllables before primary stress → no secondary stress on the second syllable /201(-)/
if three syllables or more before primary stress → check i there is a deriving form
- if no deriving words in these words : secondary stress on FIRST SYLLABLE
- if deriving form : primary stress on this deriving form : (it becomes 2) : /200-/ or /020/
