Manager
A person responsible for setting objectives, manage resources and motivating workers to achieve business objectives.
Management
The organisation & coordination of activities in order to achieve business objectives.
Autocratic management
Management style in which one manager makes all the decisions with none or very little input from others.
Disadvantage of autocratic
- Could demotivate workers who want to contribute and accept responsibility.
- Lacks creativity since ideas only are from one manager.
Advantage of autocratic
- Less time consuming
- Leader takes all the decisions as they like
Democratic management
Management style which encourages active participation of workers in taking decisions.
Democratic advantages
- Participation is encouraged which can motivate employees
- Two-way communication which allows feedback from workers.
Democratic disadvantages
- Two-way communication can be time consuming
- Some business issues might be too sensitive to allow worker involvement(job losses) or too secret(new product development.
Paternalistic Management
Management style based on the view that managers is in a better position than workers to know what’s best for the organisation.
Paternalistic Advantages
- Managers do what they think is best for workers
- Managers want workers to be happy
Paternalistic Disadvantages
- Some workers may be upset at the attempts to have discussions but in the end not having any power or influence.
Laissez-Faire management
Management style that leaves much of the business decision making to the workforce.
Laissez-Faire advantages
- Gives employees creative freedom
Laissez-Faire disadvantages
- Lack of feedback from managers which could be demotivating.
Theory Y
View that some managers believe employees are internally motivated, enjoy their work & are prepared to take on additional responsibilites.
