16
Q

Describe the structure of the dermis

A

Contains collagen & connective tissue interlaced with elastic fibres.
Blood vessels, sensory nerve endings, sweat glands & ducts, sebaceous glands, hair and arrector pili muscles present.

17
Q

Describe the structure of the subcutaneous

A

adipose (fat tissue) and areolar tissues (collagen cells)

18
Q

How does the integumentary system help cool the body

A
  • vasodilation to skin to increase heat loss via radiation
  • sweat to increase heat loss via evaporation
19
Q

How does the integumentary system help increase body temperature

A
  • vasoconstriction to skin to decrease heat loss via radiation
  • arrector pili muscles pull hairs up to “trap” air and decrease heat loss due to radiation
