What is Functional family therapy (FFT)
A short term strength based intervention based on risk and protective factors
What is the goal of FFT
Help family and youth reduce maladaptive behaviors with adaptive behaviors.
Reduce/eliminate problematic substance use and problem behavior in the family
Improve family functioning
What are the 5 stages of FFT

What is the engagement stage
Maximize the familys expectations of positive change

Create motivation for long term change

Identifies relational functions e.g. connection and hierarchy in family

- Conceptualizes alternative positive behaviors that serve same function as negative behaviors

Maintain and expand change

- Anticipate and plan for future stressors in family
- New strenghtned relationship and communication
Effectiveness of FFT
Effective in treating: Substance use disorder, disruptive behaviour, conduct disorder
Significant long term reductions in rearrests and violent behavior and prevents involvement in criminal system

Reduces sibling involvement in high risk behavior
POsitive effects on family conflict, communication etc
What is the goal of Brief Strategic Family Therapy BSFT
To improve family relations. Therapists in directive and active roles. It is based on studies to inderstand culture and value orientations of the community
Where is BSFt conducted
Offered in the home or in clinic for 3 months. Most work is done by asking the family to enact discussions of problems. Focus is on relationships not on behavior change
What is the effectiveness of BSFT
Shows promising results, more research needed
Decrease in problem behaviors and weed, improved family functioning
Higher levels of engagement compared to community based treatment
What is multidimensional family therapy
Comprehensive outpatient family bases treatment for substance and behavioral problems. Delivered in the home or community
Goals of multidimensional family therapy
- Help develop coping and problem solving skills
- Help family improve interpersonal functioning
What is the role of a therapist in multidimensional
Act as an intensive case manager to help the family recieve needed services
Components of multidimensional
- Engage youth and family
- Behavior focus
- Generalize new skills and behavior

What is multisystemic therapy
An alternative to out of home placement/ prison. Combined aspects of cognitive, behavioral and family therapies. Therapists work closely with families to target problems and implement intervention strategies
Where is multisystemic implemented
In the youth natural environment ie. home, school, community
Is multisystemic intensive?
Yes. 2-4 therapists and a supervisor. Thry have low caseloads and they are available 24/7
