1.2 Elements, compounds, and mixtures Flashcards
What is an element?
A substance that cant be split into anything simpler by chemical means
How are elements shown in diagrams?
As atoms of a single colour or size
What is a compound?
Something that is formed when two or more elements chemically combine
How are compounds shown in diagrams?
More than one type of atom bonded together
What is a mixture?
Various substances mixed together and no chemical reaction occurred
What is filtration?
Can be used to separate a solid from a liquid, by using filter paper and a funnel into a beaker.
What is crystallisation?
Can be used to separate a solute from a solution
What is simple distillation and describe it?
Can be used to separate the components of a solution, the water is boiled and condensed back to a liquid by the condenser
What is fractional distillation and describe it?
Used to separate a mixture of liquids, by boiling both liquids, all the water condenses in the column and trickled back to the flask.
What is paper chromatography?
Used to separate a variety of mixtures of coloured inks
Formula for measuring how far the color has gone
distance moved by the spot/distance of the whole paper
