1.1 States of matter Flashcards
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solids, liquids and gases
How are the particles arranged in a solid?
Altogether, since they have strong electrostatic forces of attraction, they just vibrate and don’t move around at all
How are the particles arranged in a liquid?
Some gaps, and forces are less effective, not as strong. The particles can move around each other and are arranged randomly
How are the particles arranged in a gas?
They are all spaced out, arranged randomly and travel at high speed in all directions
Solid –> liquid
melting
Liquid –> solid
freezing
Liquid –> gas
boiling
Gas –> liquid
condensing
What is the difference between evaporation and boiling?
Evaporation is slower and occurs from only the surface of the liquid. Boiling is faster and takes place throughout all of the liquid
Solid –> gas
sublimation
Gas –> solid
deposition
What state of matter is something below its melting point?
A solid
What state of matter is something between its melting and boiling point?
A liquid
What state of matter is something above its boiling point?
A gas
What is the definition for diffusion?
The spreading out of particles from where they are at a high concentration to where they are at a low concentration
