1.2 Electron Configuration Flashcards
1
Q
How many orbitals do S P D & F have and how many electrons can each of them hold?
A
S = 1 orbital and 2 electrons P = 3 orbitals and 6 electrons D = 5 orbitals and 10 electrons F = 7 orbitals and 14 electrons
2
Q
Paramagnetic vs diamagnetic?
A
Paramagnetic: Attracted towards magnet field…Unpaired electrons…An odd number of electrons.
Diamagnetic: Not attracted towards magnetic field…Slight deflection away from magnetic field… Electrons paired…An even number of electrons.

What elements are exceptions to electron configuration?
A
Cr Cu

Q
Electron configuration rules to know…
A
- Full D orbitals do not count towards valence electrons, but are considered core electrons.
- When writing out the electron configuration for an ion, remove electrons from the higher numbered shell.
