What were mamluks? Where were they often from?
They were enslaved people. usually from Turkey or Central Asia.
What would mamluks do in society?
They would become soldiers, or bureaucrats.
What is the leader of the Seljuk Turks called? (They were Muslim).
The Sultan.
What is a Caliph?
A successor to the Prophet, or a Muslim emporer.
Who were the Mongols?
They were Central Asians, who conquered the remaining Abbasid Empire in 1258.
Who were the Mongols stopped by?
Egypt.
What countries did the Abbasids connect? Where did most goods go through?
Asia, Europe, and North Africa. Goods went through Baghdad.
Who was the Abbasid Caliphate run by?
Arabs and Persians.
What are the 3 Islamic states with Turkish roots? What countries were they placed in?
Ottoman empire in Turkey, Safavid empire in Persia, and the Mughal empire in India.
What are the two main branches of Islam? What are their differences?
Sunni, who believe their leader should be chosen themselves. And Shia, who believe their leader should be chosen by Muhammad’s bloodline.
What is the law of Islam?
Shari’ah.
What is Jizya?
A tax paid by non-Muslims to their Muslim rulers.
What is a Dhimmi?
A person who lives in a Muslim conquered region, who retains their original faith.
What did the Battle of Tours symbolize?
The limit of rapid Islam expansion into W Europe.
