1.2 CLIMATE CHANGE Flashcards
GH effect
Suns energy gets trapped by the GHGs in the atmosphere and reflect back to earth
Tipping point
the point when climate change cannot be undone or reversed
Climate change
alteration in the worlds weather. Storms more frequent
Fossil fuels
non renewable energy sources. Burning them creates GHGs.
No GH effect =
30 degree drop
Enhanced GH effect
humans strengthening the GH effect and it can be prevented.
Contribute to GH effect
methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides and cluroflurocarbons.
Interglacial (short warm period) -
More Co2in atmosphere > more long wave heat energy absorbed by GHGs > less GHGs lost to space > global temperature rise.
Glacial (short cold period)
Less Co2 in atmosphere > less long wave heat energy absorbed by GHGs > more GHGs lost to space > Global temperatures decrease
Ice cores
snow falls and traps some of the gases that were in the atmosphere > snow is then squashed turning to ice > ice contains bubbles of Co2 > the more Co2 the warmer the atmosphere was when it fell.
Urban heat island
an area significantly hotter than its surroundings due to humans
Glaciers melt by
2200
Tourism is big income
But will decrease if air travel rises
Changes in Ocean current
Could disrupt fish stock
HEP possibilities
higher discharge in local rivers
