1.2 Classifications Of Metals Flashcards
Non ferrous- examples, characteristics and uses
Aluminium- lightweight, mallebable, corrosion resistant, electrical and thermal conductor
Uses= drinks cans, baking foil and packaging
Copper- malleable, tough, corrosion resistant, electrical and thermal conductor
Uses= electrical wires, water and hot water pipes, central heating pipes
Silver- can be soldered, mallebale, corrosion resistant
Uses= jewellery, cutlery
Gold- corrosion resistant, can be soldered, mallebale
Uses= electronic components, jewellery
Ferrous- examples, properties and uses
Low carbon steel- high tensile strength, tough, mallebale, poor sestistance to corrosion
Uses= nuts, bolts, screws and car bodies
Medium carbon steel- harden then low carbon but less ductile, tough
Uses= strings, garden tools
Cast iron- hard outer skin but brittle cores good under compression
Uses= machines parts, sheet furniture like bins and lighting
Ferrous alloys- examples, properties and uses
Stainless steel- tough, hard, corrosion resitistant
Uses= sinks, kitchenware and cutlery
High speed steel- hard, tough, high level of reistance to heat
Uses= tool blades, drills bits
Non ferrous alloy- examples, properties and uses
Bronze- tough, corrosion resistance, can be case
Uses= statues, coins
Brass- corrosion resistant, good electrical and thermal conductor, low melting point
Uses= boat fittings, door furniture
Pewter- mallebale, Lowe melting point, casts well
Uses= flasks, photo frames, sports trophies
