1.2 Atomic theory Flashcards
What are the three particles in an atom?
Election
Proton
Neutron
What’s the mass and charge of a proton?
Charge: +1
Mass: 1
What’s the mass and charge of a neutron?
Charge: 0
Mass: 1
What’s the mass and charge of an electron?
Charge: -1
Mass: 0
What’s the maximum amount of electrons that can be in shell one?
2 electrons (Think He)
What’s the maximum amount of electrons that can be in shell 2?
8 electrons
What does the atomic number of an element tell you?
The number of protons an atom contains
What is the mass number equal to?
The number of protons plus the number of neutrons
What are isotopes?
Isotopes are atoms with the same atomic number but different mass number
What is an ion?
An particle which has gained or loses an electron
What type of ions do metals form?
Metals loose electrons to form positive ions
What type of ions do Non-metals form?
Non- metals gain electrons to form negative ions
What is a Nobel gas?
Group 8/0 elements have a full outer shell (Stable) so don’t form ions
