11.5 Introduction of reaction mechanisms Flashcards
Homolytic fission
-the covalent bond breaks and the electrons are evenly shared between the bonding atoms forming radicals
Heterolytic fission
-covalent bond breaks and one of the bonding atoms takes both electrons from the covalent bond from oppositely charged ions.
Curly arrows
-Shows the movement of electron pairs when bonds are broken or made.
Types of reactions
-Addition reactions
-Substitution reactions
-Elimination reactions
Define addition reactions
Two reactants join to form one product.
Define Substitution reactions
An atom or group of atoms is replaced by an atom or group atoms.
Define Elimination reactions
Removal of a smaller molecule from a larger one
-Usually forms two products
