11.1-3 Basic Concepts Flashcards
-Nomenclature -Representing the formula of organic compounds
What is a hydrocarbon?
- compound contain only hydrogen and Carbon atoms
What is a saturated hydrocarbons?
-A hydrocarbon has single bonds only.
Such as Alkanes
What is a unsaturated hydrocarbons?
-A hydrocarbon that has multiple C-C bonds.
Such as Alkenes
Define a Functional Group
-A part of an organic molecule that is largely responsible the molecule’s chemical properties
Aliphatic
-carbon atoms are joined in a straight ,branched chains or non aromatic rings
Alicyclic
-carbon atoms are joined in to each other in a ring structure, with or without branches.
Aromatic
-some or all of the carbon are found in benzene ring.
Aldehydes Functional Group and Suffix
-CHO
Suffix - al
Very important Rule when naming Alkenes
-State the position of the double bond on the Alkene.
e.g Pent-2-ene
Ketone Functional group and Suffix
-C(CO)C-
Suffix - one
Carboxylic acid functional group and Suffix
-COOH
Suffix- oic
Molecular formula
-shows the number and types of atoms of each element in a molecule.
Empirical formula
-the simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each elements in compound.
Structural formula
-shows arrangement of atoms (through the small details)
-Almost like a written version of a displayed formula
