1.1.3 - Comment on whether CAPD meets scientific criteria for validity Flashcards
What are the definition concerns with CAPD?
- it’s not in the DSM-5
- It’s behaviourally defined
- there is much overlap
What are the problems with the psychometric properties of CAPD’s tests?
They are not symptom based, but based on the results of auditory tests
The tests involve the use of language, so it is difficult to rule out possibility of poor performance due to language disorder
11 different subtypes of CAPD are not easy to distinguish, and it’s unclear how they are correlated
What are the distinctiveness problems with CAPD?
WE don’t know if it is distinct from speech, language or literacy disorders
There are overlaps with language disorders, as the tests are language based
They lack external discriminant validity (i.e. - they can’t be differentiated from other disorders)
Describe the empirical research for CAPD
There is none! No evidence to support reliability or construct validity
What are the four areas of problems with the validity of CAPD
Definitional concerns
Psychometric properties of tests
Distinctness
Lack of empirical research
