Two categories of Hair Removal
Temporary and permanent
Hirsutism
A condition where women grow hair in areas of the body that men typically grow more hair
Types of temporary hair removal
Shaving, waxing, chemical depilatories, threading, tweezing, and sugaring
Shaving
Most often used; performed with electric shaver, clippers, or razor
Chemical Depilatories
A painless method of hair removal that dissolves the hair at skin level
Forms of Chemical Depilatories
Cream, paste, powder (which is designed to be mixed)
Main ingredient in Chemical Depilatories
Thioglycolic acid derivative; alkaline PH (POTENTIAL HYDROGEN)
Epilation
The removal of hair from the follicle
Methods of Epilation
Tweezing, Waxing, Threading, Sugaring, Electrolysis, Laser, photoepilation
Tweezing
Hair removal method most commonly used to remove hair from smaller areas; brows, chin, around the mouth; grasp individual hair and remove in direction of hair growth
Using on larger areas would be too time consuming and painful
Can be used to supplement other hair removal methods
Shaping the Eyebrows
Brows begin over the side corner of the eye
Highest point of the arch should occur over the outside of the iris
Diagonal line from the outside of the nose, extending past the outside on the eye; end location of the eyebrow
Waxing
Service where hair is physically removed from the follicle
Used of large and small areas
Types of wax
Hard; non-strip (most common)
Soft; strip
Soft wax
Asses direction of hair growth Apply cleansing gel Light dust with powder Obtain wax Apply wax at 45 degree angle Discard spatula Apply removal strip, press, and smooth Hold skin taught and remove strip Apply pressure
When waxing…
Always check temp on wrist, never double dip, do not wax over sunburn, advise client to not suntan following waxing service, avoid waxing lanugo; make cause skin to loose softness.
