11.2 Study Guude Flashcards
Nitrogen fixation
The process by which atmospheric nitrogen is converted by either a natural or an industrial means to a form of nitrogen such as ammonia.
Nitrification
a microbial process by which reduced nitrogen compounds (primarily ammonia) are sequentially oxidized to nitrite and nitrate.
Denitrification
the loss or removal of nitrogen or nitrogen compounds.
Inputs and outputs of:
Photosynthesis
Cellular Respiration
- Carbon dioxide and water are inputs of photosynthesis. Oxygen and sugars are outputs.
- Glucose and oxygen as inputs, and produces carbon dioxide, water, and energy (ATP) as outputs.
How different nutrients enter and leave the food chain
Decomposers release nutrients when they break down dead organisms. The nutrients are taken up by plants through their roots. The nutrients pass to primary consumers when they eat the plants. The nutrients pass to higher level consumers when they eat lower level consumers.
Where plants get each nutrient
What type of organisms perform the processes of photosynthesis and cellular respiration
Plants and many other photosynthetic organisms can perform both photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
Differentiate between how energy and how carbon flow through a food chain
Thus, Food Chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which the transfer of energy and nutrients takes place. The energy and nutrients flow in the form of food from organism to organism by eating and being eaten. This is what forms the basis of energy flow in ecosystem.
