11.2 - Nomenclature of organic compounds Flashcards
Aliphatic
Carbon atoms joining together in either branched or unbranched chains
Alicyclic
Carbon atoms joined together to form a ring structure
Aromatic
Some/all the carbon atoms join together to form a benzene ring
Alkanes
Single carbon-to-carbon bonds
Alkenes
Double carbon-to-carbon bonds
Alkynes
Triple carbon-to-carbon bonds
Prefix
Add before the stem
*indicate the presence of side chains or functional groups
Suffix
Add after the stem
*indicate functional groups
Naming Aliphatic Alkanes
- Suffix (-ane)
- Identify the long carbon chain (parent)
- Identify side chains to the parent chain (alkyl groups)
The alkyl group removes the hydrogen atom from the parent chain
Becomes the prefix to the parent chain - Add the numbers before alkyl groups to show the position of the alkyl groups on the parent chain
Naming Alicyclic Alkanes
- Identify the longest carbon chain
2. Prefix (Cyclo-)
Naming Alkenes
- Identify the suffix (-ene)
- Identify the longest carbon chain
- Identify double bonds
Naming compounds containing functional group
- Identify the longest carbon chain
- Identify any functional groups and alkyl side chains and use the correct prefix and suffix
- Number the alkyl groups according to their position on the longest carbon chain
Naming alcohols
- Identify the functional group and suffix
- Identify the longest carbon chain
- Identify which carbon atom has the functional groups
Naming Aldehydes
- Identify functional groups and suffix
2. Identify the longest carbon chain
Naming multiple functional group
- Identify the longest chain carbon
2. Identify the carbon atom the functional group is on and the correct prefix
