What is the main work method?
Full Time (42 hours per week)
What is multi-skilling?
The process of training employees to do several different jobs within the business
What is the purpose of multi-skilling?
To give employees a range of skills as well as the ability to cover different roles. However it requires good training to make staff efficient
What is Part-Time staff?
These employees work shorter hours than full time staff. Hours can be tailored to higher customer demand times e.g. restaurants on weekends. However it takes longer to train part time staff
What is temporary staff?
Staff employed by the business for a specific period of time to cover periods of higher demand or staff absence
Why is flexible hours beneficial?
They allow staff to vary the hours they work to meet the needs of the business and their own personal needs.
What is a zero hour contract?
Contracts where businesses do not guarantee any work to an employee until demand increases.
What is home working?
Where an employee does all or part of their job at home without attending the business location. This lowers costs of workspace but staff may be less productive
What is job sharing?
When two employees share the responsibilities and benefits of a full time staff member. Divided by hours worked on a pro rata basis
What is hot desking?
Where desks in an office are not allocated to specific members of staff, they’re only allocated to staff who need a desk to carry out work
What is the impact of new technology on working practices?
- Improved producticity and quality as machines can speed up the manufacturing process
- More flexible working practices allows more productivity and motivation
-However, business may cut costs by firing employees
What are some evaluative points to changes in working practices?
-More flexible hours due to being able to work from home
-Manufacturing jobs made physically easier through machinery
-However, little job security and low wages due to zero hour contracts
-Can cause stress, higher job absenteeism, labour turnover
