After the defeat at the battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954

As the new president Dwight D. Eisenhower, was concerned Vietnam could fall to communism now it was no longer under french influence
What happened in July 1954?
Vietnam was temporarily split into two, until elections could be held and the French left the north and viet minh left the south
How was the domino theory significant to American involvement in Vietnam?
As it was devised by the US government so that if south Vietnam fell to communism, the ideology would spread to nearby countries and soon, the whole of Asia would become communist
How was America involved in Vietnam by trying to avoid conflict?
- As Eisenhower established the new look policy where he sent money, equipment and military political experts to south Vietnam to help the country become secure
- also backed Ngo Dinh Diem the anti communist leader of south Vietnam despite his brutality and corruption

The National Front for Liberation of South Vietnam established in December 1960 and aimed to overthrow Diem

- the USA secretly backed diems assassination on 2nd November 1963
- Kennedy’s successor Lyndon B Johnson ordered full military involvement in Vietnam and the war was to last over a decade
