Q

What periods of apnea are considered normal?

A

Most newborn infants breathe irregularly and at varying depths. Respirations are periodic (i.e., episodes of 5–10 seconds without breathing) rather than regular, particularly if the infant is premature. Apnea refers to a cessation of breathing ≥20 seconds in duration, during which an infant’s color changes from normal to cyanotic. This is abnormal and requires investigation and treatment.
