1.1 Environmental value systems Flashcards
Environmental Value systems, like any other system have…
- Inputs: Culture, science, media, education
- Processes: Assimilation, thinking, evaluating
- Outputs: Viewpoints, decisions
What does the environmental movement promote?
The concepts of protection and control through the SUSTAINABLE management of resources
What are conservationists?
Conservations do NOT conserve the environment for its intrinsic value but for the value of the goods and resources it provides
What are preservationists?
Preservationists advocate for the preservation of land and its resources in pristine and untouched condition
Explain CASE STUDY GULF OF MEXICO:
Date: April 20, 2010
Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill, Explosion on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig
International agreement: Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals
Impacts: Fishing was closed, tourism decreased, water pollution lead to species dying
What is instrinsic value?
Something of value just because it is there, cannot sell it in return of anything else
What is instrumental value?
Something valued because it is a means to an end, for example: Gold
EVS APPROACHES in order
Ecocentrism: Deep ecologists and Self reliance soft ecologists
Anthropocentrism: Environmental managers
Technocentrism: Cornucopians
Explain ecocentric value system
Proposes that there IS an instrinsic value to natural resources and natural systems and that spiritual, social and environmental dimensions are all integrated
Differentiate deep ecologists from self reliance soft ecologists
Deep ecologists: nature should be left alone, no room for development
Self reliance soft ecologists: Between ecocentris, and anthropocentrism, believe there is room for some development, on a local community
Explain anthropocentric value system
A human centred worldview that believes nature is there not because of its intrinsic value, but because we can use all of its natural resources for our benefit (and development)
Explain technocentric value system
Absolute faith in technology and industry, natural processes should be understood so that we can control them and replace them with technology if necessary
(environmental issues = opportunities for science to advance)
Define biorights
Rights of endangered species to exist and not be pestered
