1.1- Age Flashcards
Name 5 factors of our physiology that is impacted by our age as we get older?
- Flexibility
- Strength
- Oxygen capacity
- Skill levels
- Risk of diseases, getting ill and slower recovery from injury
How is our flexibility impacted as we get older?
As a teenager our flexibility might be quite high, but as we get older is decreases.
How is our strength impacted as we get older?
As we get older our strength decreases. However, most teenagers will not meet their maximal strength until their late teens or early twenties.
How is our oxygen capacity impacted as we get older?
As we get older our oxygen capacity reduces as the heart becomes less efficient. Our arteries lose their elasticity which increases blood pressure and reduces blood flow.
How is our risk of disease, getting ill and recovery time from injury impacted as we get older?
As we get older there is an increases risk of getting ill and catching diseases. There is also a gradual build up of wear and tear on the body. Recovery time from injury also decreases a lot.
Why is it important to be aware of the impacts of age on our bodies?
It is important as it allows us to take into consideration what might happen and allows us to cope with them better.
Why are age divisions in sport important?
Age divisions are the most basic response to factoring in age into sports. For example, at schools, sports is split into year groups and at clubs or competitions it may split into categories such as under-16s and under-18s. This is due to the specific physiology of our body at certain ages.
Define peak
Your peak is when you are at our very best. The period when you are best prepared to perform.
Define physiology
Physiology is the function and processes of the human body.
Define flexibility
Flexibility is the range of movement around a joint.
