1.1-2.1 characteristics of living things, variety of living organisms Flashcards
Name the features a plant cell has that an animal cell doesn’t
cell wall
permanent/large vacuole
chloroplasts
What is the difference between eukaryotes and prokaryotes
Eukaryotes (animal, plants, fungi, protoctists) are organisms that have a nucleus or organelles that are found within a plasma membrane
Prokaryotes (bacteria) do not have a nucleus or membrane bound organelles
What are Fungi’s cell wall made of?
chitin
How does Fungi store their carbohydrates?
glycogen
Describe what saphatrophic nutrition means
Digestive enzymes are secreted out on to break down food molecules outside the fungi to be absorbed
Give examples of fungi
Yeast
mushroom
Mold
Give an example of a single-celled and a multi-cellular fungi
Single-celled: Yeast
Multi-cellular: Mushroom
Describe Fungi structure
Some Uni-cellular some Multi-cellular
Body is usually organized into into a mycellium of thread-like structure
Describe Bacteria Structure
Single celled & very small
contained flagella for movement, lack a nucleus but have circular chromosones of DNA and a capsule
How do bacteria eat
Some can carry out photosynthesis but they mainly eat off of other organisms dead or alive
Give examples of bacteria
Lactobacillus (used to make yoghurt)
Pneumococcus (causes pneumonia)
Describe a viruses structure
Come in a variety of shapes and sizes
no organelles, no nucleus but have one type of nucleic acid (either RNA or DNA) & a protein coat
Why are viruses considered not living?
They can only reproduce within living cells
(by hijacking cell mechanisms of any organism to create ,millions of copies of themseleves and then spread by cell bursting)
Give examples of viruses
Tobacco mosaic virus (prevents chloroplast formation)
HIV (leading to AIDS)
Give an example of plant like and animal like protoctist
Animal-like : Amoeba
Plant-like: Chlorella
