10A Flashcards
1
Q
Tolerance Range
A
The range of environmental conditions in which an organism can survive
- zone of Physiological stress (survive)
- Optimum Range (thrive)
- Zone of Physiological stress (survive)
- Zone of intolerance (not stay alive)
2
Q
Structural Adaptation
A
- Modifications to an organism’s physical structure
- e.g, Insulation, evolved to the optimal thickness of fur and fat to regulate temperatures.
3
Q
Physiological Adaptation
A
- Envolved modification to an organism’s internal functioning or metabolic processes
- e.g, Metabolic Heat, Can be either an endotherm or an Ectotherm.
- Endotherms spend a lot of energy producing metabolic heat and must find strategies to release excess heat
- Ectotherms obtain heat from their environment and they don’t spend energy generating metabolic heat
4
Q
Behavioural Adaptation
A
- Evolved modifications to an organism’s actions
- e.g, Evading Extreme Conditions, is when an animal avoids the extreme temperatures. They do this by seeking out shade or retreat to a burrow system.
- being nocturnal can be a Behavioural Adaptaton as the animal has adapted to being inactive during the day and active during the night
- this allows them to avoid certain predators and be able to do their normal routines at night when it’s nice and cold.
5
Q
Adaptations for Plants in the Desert
A
- In hot environments, plants usually limit te amount of heat being absorbed
6
Q
Three Common Strategies to limit Heat Absorption for Plants
A
- Lightly coloured or reflective leaves (or Photosynthetic Organs)
- Photosynthetic Organs are macro structures where photosynthesis is taken place.
- this includes the leaves and photosynthetic branches
- Photosynthetic Organs are macro structures where photosynthesis is taken place.
- Producing leaves that are smaller in surface area
- orienting their leaves vertically to minimise the surface area exposed to the sun
7
Q
Increasing Water Uptakes
A
- Plants get their water from the absorption through their roots
- in a desert, plants spread their roots hori
