103c: Foundation Supports Flashcards
Can I store stuff in a crawl space foundation?
Yes
Can I have a full height basement that’s 2ft high?
No. There’s no living space….
The soil under my foundation is solid but is prone to move around…is there a point load type foundation I can use to isolate how much soil area I cover?
Grade beam foundation
Do I need to excavate below the frost line to build my driveway? How come?
No. You are building a slab on grade
My garage needs a little extra support, but I’m not digging down below the depth of frost penetration, what could I do?
Make a thickened edge slab to reinforce the edges
I want a really sturdy deck since I’m on a hill, and 2x10 won’t cut it. Thoughts?
Pour piles for the deck to sit on
The excavator cut a bit too deep. Fortunately I ordered 10% more concrete than I needed to poor my telepost footings. Is it salvageable?
Yes, you can thicken the footings with more concrete to make up for the height loss
The beam is a bit heavier than I thought and my engineer wants more support under the telepost. Is there a way to get a thicker footing?
Build a pier, so the middle has more concrete and more support
My basement footings step down a total of 3 feet. I’m lazy and only want to do one step that’s 5 feet long. No harm right?
Wrong. Step footing has to be at a run:rise ratio of 2:1
The outside of my building has some pretty big columns at the front…but I can’t stop and pour a pad right in the middle of my strip footing. What should I do?
Construct a combined footing that splices a pad and strip together
Is there something I can use to support my bearing wall in the basement? I DON’T think the inspector will be stoked if I put it on the slab later….
Yes. Build a T footing to sit the wall on
I fucked up and didn’t put rebar in one side of my foundation walls. What’s going to happen?
The soil pressure COULD cave it in since the inside face won’t have the added tensile strength
My excavator is set to cut down to 2m…but I’m pretty sure I saw a sewer line on the plan at 1.8m….is that ok?
No. The excavation must be raised to account for the sewer line
UGH, THE SEWER LINE IS RIGHT WHERE MY FOOTINGS HAVE TO GO. Any tips?
Bridge the gap over the sewer line trench. Reinforce properly, and it will still support the foundation.
Will my excavation be the same depth at the top and bottom of the hill I’m on??
No. The top will be deepest, and bottom will be shallowest to create a level surface
