1020 MODULE 2 BODY FLUID Flashcards
Bodily Fluid Compartments
Intracellular- compromised in the cell.
The extracellular- environment outside the cell
the extracellular environment has a blood supply- plasma and interstitial.
BLOOD PLASMA AND INTERSTITIAL ARE NOT TOGETHER
What is plasma
yellow pale liquid that is 92% water and 8% other– nutrients, gases, ions, proteins
blood plasma
a) is mostly made up of proteins, gases, ions, nutrients
b) is usually hypertonic to red blood cells
c) compromises part of the interstitial fluid
d) is usually isotonic to the red blood cells
Chemical Composition
Potassium is higher inside the cell
Which ion has the highest concentration in the intracellular fluid
remember that intracellular fluid is inside the cell and inside the cell, potassium is more.
Why is there a difference in the ionic compartment between inside and outside the cell
- this is caused by the cell membrane which is also called the plasma membrane
- this forms a physical barrier between the intracellular and extracellular fluid
- this selectively permeable membrane allows some substances in while some macromolecules out.
membrane has special channels, pores, and special transport systems
