Battle of Tarawa
Japanese commander in the Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands said that it would take Americans 100 years to conquer it.
On November 20 1943, Marines landed and secured the island in 76 hours.
Heavy marine losses from enemy fire and drowning since they were offloaded hundreds of yards from the beach due to extended reefs.
