What were the 2 factors driving immigration?
War and trade
How did Britain’s relationship with the wider world affect immigration?
1-Irish migrants came because of conflict caused by English colonisation
2-Immigrants from Gascony and Brabant migrated because of the Hundred Years’ War between England and France
3-Kings convinced Flemish and Dutch weavers to come because they wanted to change England’s trading relationship with Europe
Who came and why?
Artisans and craftspeople came in search of work but some were refugees from war. Wealthy merchants and bankers came to make money from trade and investment
What were their experiences?
Immigrants were dispersed throughout the country but settled well. There was resentment from craft guilds who throught immigrants were a threat to employment
What was the impact of the migrants?
Weavers, craftspeople, merchants and bankers played a key role in England’s transition from an economy producing raw materials to a manufacturing economy

Many Dutch and Flemish(escaping war and poverty), English and Welsh(work), Scottish/Irish(some wars), Jews from France(lend money to kings/bishops), German merchants/Italin bankers(to make money)
How could someone born overseas become pure English?
By receiving a letter of denization from the King
Why did the Flemish/Dutch migrants come to England?
Came from the Low Countries eg Belgium/Netherlands, some as refugees amd some were skilled craftsmen who wanted better wages
What did the Flemish/Dutch migrants work as?
Tailors, shoemakers, saddles, dyers, opticians, brick-makers
What did King Edward III to build a cloth-making industry, when and why?
In the 1330s, he restricted wool exports because the Flemings had the skills need to start a manufacturing economy
When did John Kempe arrive in England?
1331 with special permission from the King and even though there was growing hostility towards foreign migrants Kempe and others prospered
