START - made easy by the internet. Less risky than in rl
SUSTAIN - made much easier by the internet - easy access to children - to csam and to a community of offenders
SECOURS (help) - community help - security advice, personal protection, how to offend and how not to get caught. Also consider getting caught can be a relief to get help / stop. Self help also available
SATISFACTION (sexual) - communication with children / other offenders to discuss - CSE & CSAM material. Getting over finkhlors preconditions (brick walls)
Describe the 4 ‘D’s’ when talking about offenders justification (for offenders or are NOT predisposed to this type of offending
DISCOVERY - exploration for both offenders and victims (who may not see themselves as exploited).
DECIDE - the decision to continue the interest / offend. Some might stop temporarily or otherwise and destroy their CSAM
DEEPEN - they fall further into the rabbit hole, deepen connections with other offenders, escalate their behavior, grooming and contact offences may occur. May start alienating themselves from normal society
DESTROY - destroys lives - the offenders family / victim’s lives / their own life
Recap - Justification of their behavior
It relates to confirmation and validation of their beliefs.
Chosing to follow a narrative that suits their needs - may include minimization / normalization of the behavior
