What is a stereotype?
An association of a social group with specific characteristics
What is prejudice?
An unfavourable attitude towards a social group and it’s members
What is discimination?
A behavioural expression of a prejudice
What is the three componant attitude model of prejudice?
Cognitive: Our beliefs
Affective: Strong feelings
Conative: Behavioural intention
What is the effect of prejudice on self esteem?
Stigmatized groups are devalued by society and find it difficult to avoid negative evaluations
As a result this can become internalized and damage wellbeing
What is stereotype threat?
The fear that you’ll confirm negative stereotypes about the group you belong to. People get nervous and perform worse
How can prejudice cause dehumanization?
In severe cases, groups are reduced to a less than human status where ingroups have more human essence
This can be subtle or explicit
How can we explain prejudice with right wing authoritarianism?
Authoritarians protect their value system by devaluing outgroups. They see themselves as moral and justified
How can we explain prejudice with social dominance theory?
One group will always be more valued than another
How can we explain prejudice with social identity theory?
People are biased in favour of their own group
Prejudice is an attempt to enhance self esteem and reduce uncertainty
What is hostile sexism?
Subjective negative views towards women
What is benevolent sexism?
Restricting roles yet having positive emotions
How is sexism expressed through paternalism?
Dominance and protection
How is sexism expressed through gender differentiation?
Complementry and competitive - justification for the division of labour
How is sexism expressed through heterosexuality?
Hostile and intimate with a dependancy on women
