10. Alcohols, carboxylic acids & esters Flashcards
What functional group do alcohols contain?
-OH
What are the first three members of the homologous series of alcohols ?
Methanol, Ethanol, and propanol
What is the formula of Ethanol?
CH3 CH2 OH
Properties of alcohols:
Dissolves in water to form a neutral solution
React with sodium to produce Hydrogen
Burn in air
Used as fuels and solvents, and ethanol is the main alcohol in alcoholic beverages
What is the result of oxidising Ethanol (Via an oxidising agent or by microbial action)?
Ethanoic acid
What is Ethanoic acid?
The main ingredient in vinegar
What homologous series is Ehtanoic acid a part of?
Carboxylic acids
What is the functional group in Carboxylic Acids?
-COOH
Carboxylic acids:
Dissolve in water to produce acidic solutions
React with Carbonates to produce Carbon Dioxide
React with Alcohols in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce esters
Do not ionise completely when dissolve in water and so are weak acids
What is produced with Ethanol and Ethnic acid react?
Ethyl Ethanoate the ester is produced
What is the functional group of esters?
-COO-
What are Esters?
Volatile compounds with distinctive smells and so are used as flavourings and perfumes
