Anorexia Nervousa (AN) (general info)
- peak age group
- what is it?
- Types?
14-18 years old
Restriction of energy intake relative to requirements
- Intense fear of weight gain or of becoming fat
Types:
- Restricting type
- Binge eating/ purging type
Some associated features with Anorexia NErvousa
- Restricted eating
- Rigid exercise
- Laxative/ diuretic abuse
- Bing–> purge
- Mood shifts , Fear of getting fat
Bulimia Nervosa (BN)
Late adolescence to young adulthood
- episode can last weekly for at least 3 months
- episodes of binge eating + compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain
- “normal weight” – lower end
Fluoxetine (SSRI) is used to treat
Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
Onset : 20’s
Recurrent episodes of Binge eating
Associated with 3 or more of the following:
- eating rapidly
- Eating until uncomfortably full
- Eating large amounts of food even though they are not hungry
- Eating alone due to embarrassment
- Feels disgusted/ guilty after eating
NOT ASSOCIATED WITH COMPENSATORY BEHAVIORS
- screen for these ppl when doing gastric bypass surgery
- they want help with weight but NOT with binge eating
Avoidant/ Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
Weight loss and picky eating without body image distortion
Usually seen with pervasive developmental disorders
Purgin Disorder
Inappropriate compensatory behaviors after eating a small amount of food; individual has normal body weight
Rumination
Chew food, swallow it, bring it back up, chew it again, and swallow it again
Night Eating syndrome
disproportionate amount of food eaten at night and patient also gets up at night toe at to help them fall asleep
Goal for AN patient:
females: 100% Ideal body weight
males: 90% Ideal body weight
Teach them regular pattern of eating
Family based therapy
Goal for BN and BED treatment
cessation of binge eating and or purging
-regular pattern of eating
Mindful eating
