10/23 Respiratory Tract - Dennis 2017 (Completed) Flashcards
What is the function of the conducting system?
Collects and warms air
Transmits that air into respiratory portion
What are the components of the conducting system?
Everything north of and including the tertiary bronchioles (including sinuses)
What is the function of the respiratory system?
To pass air to alveoli for gas exchange
What are the structures of the respiratory system?
Alveolar sacs —> alveolar ducts —> respiratory bronchioles
What cell type lines the airway of the respiratory tract?
Pseudostratified columnar ciliated epithelium
What cells will be found in the respiratory tract? 6
Respiratory epithelium
Ciliated, columnar epithelial
Goblet cells
What are goblet cells derived from? 7
They are a form of modified columnar epithelial cells
What is contained within the stem of a goblet cell? 7
Nucleus
Organelles
What fluid fills the pleural cavity between the parietal and visceral pleuras?
Serous fluid
What are the only components found within the respiratory system? 10
Elastic fibers
Minimal Ciliated cells and smooth muscle
Describe the make-up of primary bronchus. 13
Pseudostratified columnar ciliated cells shorter
Few goblet cells
Incomplete cartilage plates
Increased elastic fibers
What are important characteristics of bronchioles?
Few goblet cells
No submucosa or cartilage
Prominent smooth muscle
What is characteristic of terminal bronchioles?
Clara cells (produce surfactant)
Increase elastic fibers
What epithelia makes up the bronchioles, terminal bronchioles, and respiratory bronchioles? 15, 16, 17
Bronchioles & terminal bronchioles:
—> simple columnar ciliated
Respiratory bronchioles —> simple cuboidal ciliated
What epithelia makes up alveoli?
19
Simple squamous epithelia
