1. Weather Hazards Flashcards
TROPICAL STORM - typhoon HAIYAN 2013 - in the Philippines in Asia
TROPICAL STORM - Case Study - HAIYAN in the Philippines in Asia
- waves 7 metres high battered the coast - widespread flooding - extreme wind speeds - size 5
PRIMARY EFFECTS
- 6,300 people died
- 30,000 fishing boats destroyed (effects business/economy)
- main airport destroyed (effects business/economy)
SECONDARY EFFECTS
- lack of shelter, poor water lead to disease
- landslides & blocked roads due to flooding
- power supplies were cut off
-
Immediate & long term responses to a TROPICAL STORM eg Storm Haiyan in the Philippines in Asia
IMMEDIATE RESPONSES to tropical storm eg Haiyan in the Philippines in Asia
- Food (250,000 litres of water were distributed) & temporary shelter supplier by international help
- AIRCRAFT & HELICOPTERS provided to help with rescues
- Evacuation centres set up
- removed dead bodies to prevent disease
LONG TERM RESPONSES to tropical storm eg Haiyan in the Philippines in Asia
- Rebuilding of roads, buildings and bridges
- New homes built in areas less likely to flood
- improve storm forecasting to limit the damage of a future storm
Different names for a tropical storm it can be called:
Tropical Storm or a TYPHOON - or a CYCLONE - or a HURRICANE
features:
extreme winds - huge waves - flooding - storm damage
Hurricane - what are Primary Effects?
Primary Effects of a hurricane?
- roofs blown off
- roads damaged
- people made homeless
The responses to a tropical storm will depend on:
What responses are needed depends on:
- has the city or countryside been effected?
- is it in a HIC or a LIC/NEE? (ef NIC/NEE will rely on foreign help and aid)
- HICs made have some storm predicting tech so people can made preparations to leave before the storm hits
- Individuals may respond by helping their immediate family or put up flood defences
- Governments will need to lead the national rebuilding & send out supplies of emergency aid
How effective is international emergency aid?
The effectiveness of international emergency aid depends on:
- how ease it is to get it to the people - are roads destroyed?
- what are the communications like? Can people communicate that they are trapped?

Is prediction the most important factor in reduction effects of tropical storm?
Need a package of measures to help reduce the effects of tropical storms?
- SATELLITE & RADAR to TRACK & PREDICT the development of the storms + COMPUTER SOFTWARE MODELLING to track path
(but available to all countries - HIC but what about NIC/NEE - EXPENSIVE TECH
Useful for urban where many people/buildings but it is still useful in rural/countryside?
IMPORTANT SO EVACUATION PLANS CAN BE PUT INTO ACTION - SAVES LIVES & PROTECT PROPERTY/MOVE ANIMALS - PLANNING & PREPARATION
- have EVACUATION plans in place so EVERYONE KNOWS IN ADVANCE where to go QUICKLY - PROTECT LIFE
- board up windows/sand bags/move animals - PROJECT BUSINESS
- GOVERNMENTS have a CENTRAL CO-ORDINATED PLAN
- survival pack already distributed with food/water/medicine ready for people to grab in an emergency
- NEW BUILDINGS - with stand STORM DAMAGE
Where are TROPICAL STORMS formed?
TROPICAL STORMS are formed:-
- only in WATERS of of 27 degrees C - so near the EQUATOR where the weather is warmer
-
Features of a TROPICAL STORM:-
Features of a TROPICAL STORM:-
- CIRCULAR STRUCTURES - 100’s of km WIDE
- Strongest part is the centre called the EYE can be 50km across
- Eye is surrounded with the WALL
- TROPICAL STORMS bring - VERY STRONG WINDS, TORRENTIAL RAIN & LOW TEMPS
What happens if TEMPS RISE: -
IF TEMPS CONTINUE to RISE:-
- Tropical Storms are only found where the waters are 27 degrees C - if temps rise more tropical storms will there form around a wider area around the equator.

- only found over waters of 27 degrees near the EQUATOR where the weather is warmer
- CIRCULAR STRUCTURE - 100’s km wide
- Centre is EYE can be 50km across
- EYE WALL is the STRONGEST part of the storm because the AIR moves FASTER and pulls in OCEAN WATERS to FUEL the storm
- VERY STRONG winds, TORRENTIAL rain & low temps
- the path of the storms are westwards
