  1. cardiac/respiratory arrest
  2. risk to airway
  3. unresponsive
  4. systolic less than 80

Patients condition is serious enough and is deteriorating enough to be life threatening - serious pain or time crucial

  1. airway risk - stride or drooling
  2. circulation compromise
  3. BSL less than 3mmol/L
  4. drowsy - GCS less than 13

A

Patients condition may progress to life threatening - may lead to significant morbidity or humane practice mandates relief of severe discomfort or distress

  1. severe hypertension
  2. moderate/severe blood loss
  3. SaO2 90 - 95
  4. Seizure
