1- treatment options for wounds- SA Flashcards
Name the 5 groups of wound debridement
Surgical
Mechanical (wet-to-dry)
Autolytic (Honey)
Enzymatic
Biological (Maggots)
What is the most ideal lavage solution used?
Lactated ringers solution/ Hartmanns- has ideal pH and is compatible with tissue
What do wet-to-dry dressings do?
Mechanically debride the tissue = converts chronic granulation bed to a healthy one
What is topical negative pressure wound therapy?
Mechanical pump that is connected to the wound providing a partial vacuum to the wound
Draws exudate off = reducing oedema in the surrounding tissues
Advantages of topical negative pressure wound therapy?
Reduces bacteria colonisation
Promotes granulation tissue development
Increases rate of cell mitosis
Spurs migration of epithelial cells within the wound
Increases blood flow
Why is Manuka honey good for wounds?
Antibacterial effect
Healing stimulating properties
Osmotic effect = draws the fluid from wound area & thus bacteria
What are the 2 most most popular wound debridement methods in small animal?
Scraping with scalpel blade & wet-to-dry dressing
As they are the cheapest and the quickest to have an effect
What is surgical debridement
remove biofilm and devitalised tissue
